Letter to a (hopefully) new friend

Hi Recent Acquaintance About Whom I Feel Hopeful That We May Become Friends,

I have to admit that I was really impressed with your shares and general perspective at the recent panel, where we were co-panelists.  (As well as your comments at the other panels.)  I looked your email address up from your bio (no creepy stalking here).

It galls me because I want to badmouth “Catholics” from time to time, and then I find a real, honest-to-God, practicing Catholic who is a human being with an amazing perspective and wisdom – and I have to stop! and remind myself that my Catholic heritage is not all bad.

It left me with:  a strong sense of social justice;  magnificent models of people who lived spiritual lives with integrity; a deep concern for the poor and marginalized;  a deep sense of the mystery of God;  and a deep appreciation for all sacraments of earth, air, fire, water and spirit.

Therefore, we should meet for coffee.

Thank you for your lived integrity, and this brilliant reminder that the institution which is (was, and ever shall be) the Roman Catholic Church, while flawed, has some pretty fucking amazing people in its wheelhouse (like Thomas Merton).  Count yourself among them.

And find some time for us to dish, because I would love to hear more of your story.

(Please forgive my general bossiness – I learned from the best: my mom. I’ve also had a lot of coffee this morning, and I’m in a “get shit done” mood.)

Blessings,

me
